If you want to know exactly how Google views your website, what keywords people use to find you, and if there are any technical errors holding you back, you need Google Search Console (GSC).
Setting this up is a non-negotiable step for your business's SEO Google uses the system on their end, so you had better use it on your end too, to make sure Google is seeing you how you want to be seen, and showing you to searchers how you want to be shown!
Follow these steps to get connected today.
Phase 1: Preparation
Before you start, make sure you have:
A Google Account: Use the email address associated with your business (e.g., your Google Workspace or a dedicated business Gmail).
Website Access: You need admin access to your website's backend (like WordPress) OR access to your domain registrar (where you bought your domain name, like GoDaddy or Namecheap).
Phase 2: Add Your Property
Go to search.google.com/search-console and click the Start now button.
Log in with your business Google account.
You will be presented with a "Welcome to Google Search Console" screen and two property type options: Domain or URL prefix.
Select "URL prefix". (This is the easiest, most reliable method for beginners).
Enter your website URL exactly as it appears in your browser. (Make sure to include https:// and www. if your site uses it. Example: https://www.yourbusiness.com).
Click Continue.
Phase 3: Verify Ownership
Google needs proof that you actually own or manage this website. You will see several options. Choose one of the two methods below. Read both before taking action to ensure you pick the right option for you:
Method A: The HTML Tag Method (Best for WordPress / Website Builders)
Use this if you have an SEO plugin installed (like Yoast, Rank Math) or can easily inject code into your site's header.
In the GSC verification window, scroll down to "Other verification methods" and click on HTML tag.
Click the Copy button to copy the snippet of code.
Keep the Search Console tab open. In a new tab, log in to your website dashboard.
If using WordPress with an SEO plugin (e.g., Yoast):
Go to Yoast SEO -> General -> Webmaster Tools.
Paste the code into the "Google verification code" box.
Save changes.
Go back to the Google Search Console tab and click Verify.
Method B: The DNS Record Method (Best overall / Most reliable)
Use this if you know how to log in to where you bought your domain name (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare, etc.).
In the GSC verification window, select Domain name provider.
Click the Copy button to copy the TXT record value.
Open a new tab and log in to your domain registrar.
Navigate to your DNS Settings or DNS Management page.
Add a new record with the following details:
Type: TXT
Name/Host: @ (or leave blank, depending on your provider)
Value: Paste the code you copied from Google Search Console
Save the record. (Note: DNS changes can sometimes take 10-15 minutes to propagate).
Go back to the Google Search Console tab and click Verify.
Phase 4: Submit Your Sitemap
Verification proves you own the site, but submitting a sitemap tells Google exactly where all your pages are so it can index them faster.
In the left-hand sidebar of Google Search Console, click on Sitemaps.
You will see an "Add a new sitemap" section with your website's URL already listed.
Type your sitemap file name into the empty box.
For most sites, this is sitemap.xml.
If you use Yoast SEO on WordPress, it is sitemap_index.xml.
Click Submit.
Look under "Submitted sitemaps" to ensure the status says Success.
Phase 5: Wait and Monitor
Do not panic if your dashboard is empty right now. Google Search Console does not pull in historical data. It only starts tracking the moment you verify your site.
Wait 48 to 72 hours: Check back in a few days to see your initial data populate.
Monthly Check-ins: You do not need to look at this every day. Log in once a month to check your "Performance" tab to see what keywords are bringing you traffic, and look at the "Indexing" tab to ensure Google isn't having trouble reading your pages.
4 Quick SEO Wins (What to Do Next)
That's the set-up done, now the fun part - getting more visibility, traffic and sales! Its worth doing this 2-4 weeks after your initial setup.
We’re going to do some things inside the console now, but first, if this makes you nervous, take a deep breath. You cannot "break" your website from inside Google Search Console. It is purely a reporting tool. Think of it like a dashboard in your car - it tells you how fast you're going and if the engine light is on, but moving the dial with your finger won’t actually affect the speed of the car.
Once your data has been collecting for a few weeks, log back in. You don't need to be an SEO expert to use this data. Here are four highly guided, step-by-step ways to use this tool to actually grow your business.
Win 1: Supercharge Your Local "Map Pack" Ranking
Google's algorithm tries to connect your website to your Google Business Profile (the map listing that shows up when people search for local businesses). If your website clearly states what you do and where you do it, Google trusts your Map listing more, pushing it higher.
The Goal: Find out what local customers are actually typing into Google, and make sure those exact words are on your website.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Click on Performance in the left-hand menu.
Scroll down until you see a list of words. This is the Queries list—the literal phrases people typed into Google to see your site.
Look for phrases that include your city or "near me." (Example: "emergency plumber in austin" or "best dog groomer near me").
The Action: Go to your website's homepage and contact page. Do those exact phrases appear anywhere in your text? If not, log into your website editor (like WordPress or Wix) and type them in naturally.
Example Fix: Change "We offer great plumbing services" to "We offer the best emergency plumbing services in Austin, TX." This small tweak is a massive signal to Google.
Win 2: Find "Low-Hanging Fruit" Keywords
In Google search results, positions 1 through 10 are on Page 1. Positions 11 through 20 are on Page 2. Almost nobody clicks to Page 2. But if you have a page sitting at position 11, it only needs a tiny push to make it to Page 1 and start bringing you real customers.
The Goal: Identify pages stuck on Page 2 and improve them slightly.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Click on Performance in the left menu.
At the top of the chart, you will see four colored boxes. Click the one that says Average Position so it turns orange.
Scroll down to your Queries list. You will now see a new column on the right called "Position."
Look down the list for any keywords that have a position of 11.0, 12.0, 13.0, or 14.0.
Click on one of those keywords. Then, click the Pages tab just above the list. This shows you exactly which page on your site is ranking for that word.
The Action: Open that page on your website. How can you make it better? Add 2-3 new paragraphs answering a common question customers ask about that topic. Add a helpful photo or a video. Giving Google just a little more high-quality content on that specific page is often enough to bump it up to Page 1.
Win 3: Steal Traffic Without Changing Your Rankings (Improve CTR)
Sometimes, you might be ranking on Page 1, and hundreds of people are seeing your link, but nobody is clicking on it because your title is boring.
The Goal: Find pages that get seen a lot but clicked rarely, and write a better "hook" to steal those clicks from your competitors.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Go to the Performance tab.
At the top, make sure the boxes for Total Impressions (how many times people saw your link) and Average CTR (Click-Through Rate: the percentage of people who actually clicked it) are checked.
Scroll down to the Queries list.
Look for a row with a very high number in the "Impressions" column, but a very low number in the "CTR" column (anything under 2% is low).
Click the keyword, then click the Pages tab to see which page it is.
The Action: You can't fix this inside Search Console. You need to log into your website editor. Find that page and change its "SEO Title" or "Meta Title." Make it irresistible.
Instead of: "Plumbing Services"
Try: "Austin's #1 Emergency Plumbers | 24/7 Fast Response"
Win 4: Force Google to See Your Updates Immediately
When you publish a new blog post, change your prices, or update your holiday hours, Google's automated "bots" might take days or even weeks to wander back to your site and notice the change. You don't have to wait.
The Goal: Tell Google to immediately scan a specific page right now.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Copy the full URL of the page you just created or updated from your browser bar (e.g., https://www.yourbusiness.com/new-service).
Go to Google Search Console. Look at the very top of the screen—there is a grey search bar that says "Inspect any URL".
Paste your link into that top bar and hit the Enter key on your keyboard.
GSC will "think" for a moment. It might say "URL is not on Google." Don't panic, this is normal for new pages!
The Action: Look for the grey button that says REQUEST INDEXING and click it. A pop-up will appear saying "Testing if live URL can be indexed." After a minute, it will say "Indexing requested." You have successfully forced Google to put your new content in line to be added to the search engine.
Bonus: Turn Gemini (or your preferred AI model) into your SEO Assistant
You do not have to figure out this data on your own. You can use an AI like Gemini or ChatGPT to act as your personal SEO consultant. It can analyse your Search Console data for you and tell you exactly what to do.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Go to your Performance tab in Google Search Console.
Scroll down to the "Queries" or "Pages" list. Click and drag your mouse to highlight a chunk of the data (or click the "Export" button at the top right to download a spreadsheet, and copy the data from there).
Open a new chat in Gemini or your preferred AI.
Copy the Master Prompt below and paste it into the AI chat.
Paste your copied Google Search Console data immediately after the prompt and press send.
The Master Prompt
