The State of the Internet 2026: Email Marketing

The State Of Email Marketing:

Using email will continue to work as a highly effective means to acquire new clients and customers, and as a way to encourage your previous buyers to become buyers again. But the landscape has shifted drastically. In a world where AI can churn out "perfect" corporate copy in seconds, your readers’ inboxes are more crowded and noisier than ever.

What to do about it:

To survive the brutal spam filters of 2026 (both automated in the inbox and now also deep-set into the mentality of the receiver) and actually get read, your focus must shift from "broadcasting" to genuine human connection.

Let’s talk about how you’re showing up in people's digital lives. Imagine you are walking through a busy winter market. The one thing you actually need to buy before Sunday is a box of Christmas crackers.

You walk past the first vendor. He steps right into your path, shakes a box at you, and yells, "Crackers! I have the best crackers! Buy my crackers! Here's a list of my prices! Did you remember you need crackers for Sunday?!". He’s exhausting. You avoid eye contact, politely mutter "I'll think about it," and speed-walk away.

Fifty yards down, you meet the second vendor. She smiles, hands you a perfectly folded paper crown, and says, "Hey! Take this - if you're hosting teenagers this year, I’ve got a batch of crackers that actually have decent brain-teaser puzzles in them instead of those useless plastic fish. It might keep them off their phones for ten minutes while you eat".

Which vendor are you buying from? The first vendor was just making noise, reminding you that he exists and has stuff to sell. The second vendor offered genuine value. She understood your life, solved a specific problem, and treated you like a human being rather than a walking wallet.

In 2026, you can either be a welcome guest or background noise. A lot of business owners are so impressed with what they have created that they forget that just telling people they are here is not adding value. I'm the same, so no shame. It is an annoyance. You must offer value first, or you will simply be tuned out.

The 2026 Email Ecosystem

To add real value to the world, you have to understand that not every email should be a sales pitch. You need to move away from "one-size-fits-all" blasts and adopt a more human strategy.

  • The Welcome Email (The Digital Handshake): When someone joins your list, don't just throw a discount code at them. Introduce yourself as a fellow human being. Tell them exactly what kind of stories and help they can expect from you, setting a personal tone right out of the gate.

  • The Nurture/Monthly Email (The Relationship Builder): This is your coffee catch-up. Share your personal take on news, views, or thoughts relevant to your industry. Tell a story from your shop floor or share a bit of humour. The goal here is to be the "red vendor"—the one who provides the tip that makes their life easier.

  • The Offer/Promotional Email (The Earned Ask): Because you’ve spent time building trust and offering genuine value, you have earned the right to ask for the sale. This is where you drop the special offers and clear instructions on how they can buy or book.

The Anatomy of a Human Email

Once you’ve decided how to add value, you must structure the email so it actually gets seen.

  • The Subject Line: In promotional emails, there is only one purpose for the subject line: to make the receiver open your email. Avoid AI-generated clickbait; be curious, honest, and human.

  • The Headline/Intro Line: Its only purpose is to make the reader stay and move to the next paragraph. Start with something relatable: "Hi Jenny, something happened at the office today that made me think of everyone who uses our service...".

  • The Value: This is the meat of the email—the story, the tip, or the news that makes their day better.

  • The Call to Action (CTA): Get your readers used to taking small actions after reading. Ask them to check out a video, like a page, or simply reply to the email. When they are used to engaging with you, they will be far more likely to click when you eventually send a "buy now" link.

It will take a while for your list to warm to this new, more human approach, but your open rates will increase. Just remember: No matter how spectacular your business is, merely reminding people that you exist is not offering value. Go out there and be the vendor who hands out the paper crowns.
